Your home and the nbn™ broadband access network

The nbn™ broadband access network provides you with fast and reliable broadband in the comfort of your own home. To get started, check out our guide below

The nbn™ broadband access network - key facts

nbn is building and constructing the broadband access network

  • For most people, it will replace your current broadband technology: dial-up, ADSL2 or cable.
  • The nbn™ broadband access network is replacing parts of the existing phone & internet infrastructure. Most Australians will need to switch to keep using their phone and internet at home**.
  • Once it is available in your area, you will have approximately 18 months to switch before your existing phone and/or internet is disconnected.
  • Check your address to see when Australia's broadband access network is available at your premises.

nbn is a wholesaler – we don't sell direct to the public

  • nbn provides wholesale services to providers who then offer plans to the public.
  • To connect, speak to a provider about a plan that best suits your needs.
  • Your provider will also help if you have any issues once you’re connected.
  • There is no need to contact nbn directly.

Choice of provider, speed and data

  • As a consumer, you have a choice of providers and superfast speeds. In most cases, providers also offer a choice of bandwidth options.
  • Choose carefully as providers are responsible for a number of elements of the network outside of nbn’s control that will affect your internet experience. A provider's network capacity and the quality of modem they offer are just two examples of factors that can affect the performance of your internet.

*nbn is a provider of wholesale speeds to internet service providers. Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn™ network, depends on the technology over which services are delivered to your premises and some factors outside our control (like your equipment quality and software). Satellite customers may experience latency. nbn™ wholesale speed tiers available to your internet service provider vary depending on the access technology in your area.

**Services provided over the nbn™ network will be replacing phone and internet services provided over most of the existing landline networks, including copper and the majority of HFC networks within the fixed line footprint. Services provided over existing fibre networks (including in-building, health and education networks) and some special and business services may not be affected. To find out if your services will be affected, please contact your phone or internet provider.
