Shaping the future: nbn’s 2021 Grad Program now open

4-minute read

Graduating from university soon? With applications now open for nbn’s 2021 Graduate Program, here’s why it should be at the top of your list…

‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’

It’s the question we’ve all been asked at some point in our lives, usually in our younger years.

Perhaps by a curious aunty at a family gathering, the careers counsellor at school, or a friend searching for their own occupational inspiration.

As our lives stretch out before us, with many years ahead to navigate our respective career paths, employment possibilities can seem both tantalisingly and overwhelmingly endless.

When it comes to careers, the world may be our oyster, but it’s also our significant responsibility.

And that’s where a strong, tailored graduate program, like nbn’s Graduate Program, can be a real gem.

nbn’s Graduate Program

A dedicated, rotation-based program, nbn’s Graduate Program is ideal for those keen to explore roles across different areas of the business – and to start making a real contribution from day one.

Highly valued for the fresh perspective they bring to the organisation, over the course of 18 months, graduates spend six months each in three separate business units, building their knowledge and putting their skills to work.

The rotational nature of a graduate program means participants can test the corporate waters to discover (or confirm) the kind of work they find interesting, the kind of work they want more of (or less), and the kind of work where they can really shine.

And in nbn’s next graduate intake – applications are now open – two streams will be on offer to further help graduates explore their area of interest:

  • Business, Economics, Finance and Marketing
  • Coding, Computer Engineering and IT

Jenny Todorovic, nbn’s Early Career Talent Manager, says there’s never been a better time to become a graduate at nbn.

“Given recent times, it could not be more of an exciting time to join nbn.”

While it may seem unusual timing to be opening up recruitment now – what with the ups, downs and uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic – what is certain, says Jenny, is the value graduates bring to the business.

“Our grads have been instrumental in some of the most high-profile projects to help lift the digital capability of Australia.

“And what makes our program different is that it’s high-touch and personalised to you as an individual.”

Of course, the recruitment process will adhere to all government safety guidelines and directives relating to COVID-19 to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of all involved.

The kind of care taken across all stages of the graduate recruitment process.

Participating graduates are specifically matched to preferred areas of interest and study, plus – from our 2021 intake onwards – will spend time learning the ropes in our Network Engineering & Operations and Customer Experience teams.

It’s all to help equip graduates with broad skills and experience as the foundations of a successful career – and all the better if that career continues at nbn.

Meet the graduate

As a current graduate, Victor Nguyentat knows firsthand the benefits that nbn's Graduate Program can bring.

“Working at nbn is extremely rewarding,” says Victor.

“The work you do isn't menial labour or insignificant tasks. In my experience at nbn, every task given to me has or will go live into production.”

“There’s a huge focus on learning from completing real tasks that have an actual impact on the company, making you feel like a real contributor rather than ‘just a grad’.

“This displays the level of trust given to the grads, which I think is an amazing attitude to see from any company.”

Yet, this genuine appreciation for the skills the graduates bring to the business isn’t the only reason Victor enjoys working at nbn.

“One of the other reasons I enjoy working at nbn is the team and the people within the company.”

At the start of the program, graduates are paired with both a mentor and a champion to help support their ongoing development including through identifying areas for professional growth, broadening their network, and offering subject matter expertise and advice.

“Every single person I've talked to has been extremely supportive and always willing to lend a hand.”
