The school excursion goes digital

How the NBN is supporting ‘third millenium’ learning by connecting students to virtual experiences

The simple school excursion has been given a digital overhaul with virtual excursions, or ‘incursions’ the way forward for students according to a new report released yesterday by the Sydney Opera House.

Endorsed by leading international online education expert Professor Stephen Heppell the report follows a two year trial program which used high speed broadband technology to put performing arts education within the reach of all students, regardless of their location – beaming them right into the iconic Opera House from the comfort of their classroom!

With the future of digital education providing exciting experiences beyond face-to-face learning, what can students, teachers and parents look forward to?

  • Access to a world of expertise with no restrictions to experiences – students will have access to experiences from around the country and the world at their fingertips
  • Beyond just the arts, the NBN will open national and global opportunities for Australian students regardless of their location through facilitation of high quality video conferencing*

To demonstrate the potential of fast broadband in delivering enriched learning experiences, students from some of the first schools to connect to the NBN in Adelaide and Hobart took part in an ‘incursion’ which saw them take a virtual tour of the Sydney Opera House to learn about its indigenous history. Check out the video below.

* Your experience including the speeds actually achieved over the NBN depends on the technology over which services are delivered to your premises and some factors outside our control like your equipment quality, software, broadband plans and how your service provider designs its network.
