nbn statement: The Australian article

08 July 2017

In response to an article that appeared in The Australian this morning, nbn would like to make the following statement.

"During the construction of a national network such as the nbn™ network, there will inevitably be some premises that are harder to connect and take longer to deliver services to than others.

"Back in June 2013 when nbn was deploying solely Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology, around 34% of premises in fixed-broadband Brownfield areas – 55,000 premises from 163,000 total premises passed – were unserviceable.

"Since moving to the Multi-Technology Mix and using new technologies such as Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) at June 29th we had reduced this figure to just 5.8% with 253,000 unserviceable premises, from a total of 4.3 million premises passed in Brownfield areas.

"As the nbn™ network quickly increases in scale, the total number of unserviceable premises will increase, but by using FTTN and HFC we will be able to keep the overall percentage of unserviceable premises far lower than when we were deploying solely FTTP technology in fixed-broadband Brownfield areas.

"This is because our FTTN and HFC networks will generally have lead-ins established which usually enables a much faster and more convenient connection process.

"nbn is working on a range of measures to enable currently unserviceable premises to connect to the nbn network as soon as possible."
